Week 12 2nd-8th December
Week 12 already! What a journey so far. I have really
enjoyed reading the books even though reading is tiring for me.
Virtue is so very important in business because once it’s
been used and cracked it's never the same again. One never really trust someone
one that virtue has been broken. We always wonder if they are going to be
honest or are they going to lie again. Trust is very important and it’s hard to
get it. So, we need to treasure it and look after it. I quote from Charles
Handy: "Trust, too is fragile. Like a piece of China, once cracked it is
never quite the same. And people's trust in business, and those who lead it, is
today cracking. This is very sad because we need to feel secure in our dealings
with others.
The real justification of the existence of businesses according
to Charles Handy is that businesses need to make a profit. They need to make
money so that they can do more things and better things. To change the world
and have it better for everyone.
In this week’s book report when I was ready at the end of
the chapters there are questions, and I love how they are posed to really make
us think. The one goes something like this, and I am not quoting this is in my
own words. If you won the lottery, would you still work? I answered that for
myself and said: "Yes" I honestly would the next question would be
why? You don’t need the money anymore. I said: It is not about the money that I
enjoy the most but what I am doing. It’s my passion to create things and show
my personality in the products I create. I am happy when I am doing things that
show my love to heavenly father for what talents he has given me.
The one solution he has is that companies should focus more on individuals and the environmental well-being, and the other one is that companies need to allow their workers to find a work life balance. I agree with both these ways because we need to have a good work environment and if we are just going to wait for others to make that happen, we might never get it. Then the hours that some of us are working is crazy. I have just recently experienced where my husband had a 2-hour meeting on a Friday night where he didn't even think that it was for him, but they wanted him because of his position. This already shows Handy's vision, and I would support this anytime.
A personal note: I have a friend at church who's cousins' husband was killed in a car accident earlier Saturday morning. This shows us that life is short and we need to live a good and well life!
